2016 Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive Collects More Than 124,000 Lbs

On Saturday, May 14, the annual National Association of Letter Carriers’ (NALC) Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive took place, bringing in more than 124,000 pounds of food donations. Each year the U.S. Post Office, fellow union members with the NALC, and Feeding the Gulf Coast team up for this event that provides tens of thousands of pounds of food to the food bank.

These donations are crucial to providing food to those who are food insecure in our community. Last year, Feeding the Gulf Coast provided more than 4,114,000 pounds of food to individuals and families in the UWSWA four county service area.

The amount of food donated and sorted in this year’s Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive will provide more than 65,000 meals to our neighbors in need. We would like to thank everyone who contributed to the food drive and volunteered to unload and sort the donations, especially members of Local 55 heat and Frost Insulators, UA 119 JATC, and NALC Branch 469.

United Way knows that individuals cannot succeed without life’s basic essentials. Research shows that the most basic needs must be met before individuals and families can tackle other life changes. To strengthen our community, United Way of Southwest Alabama aspires to ensure that our citizens’ immediate needs are met during times of crisis and personal change.
