United Way Partners for 2016-2017 Announced
United Way of Southwest Alabama’s (UWSWA) Board of Trustees met on Thursday, February 19, 2015, to approve local agencies for partnership with UWSWA for 2016-2017.
As part of its community impact model, UWSWA collaborates with health and human service organizations in Clarke, Mobile, and Washington counties to address key social issues in the areas of UWSWA’s four building blocks for a better life: health, education, financial stability, and essentials. By partnering with local agencies, United Way of Southwest Alabama furthers its vision of strengthening communities by uniting and mobilizing resources.
“Knowledgeable volunteers and experts from our community carefully screen and select the agencies we partner with, as well as the programs funded by your contributions. Their recommendations are reviewed and approved by our volunteer Board of Trustees,” says UWSWA 2014 Board of Trustees Chairman and Airbus Americas Engineering Site Director in Mobile, David Trent. “Contributions raised in our service area stay here, and decisions about which programs to invest in and which partnerships to pursue are made here in our local community. At the heart of everything here at United Way is the community and its needs.”
Every two years, area nonprofits have the opportunity to apply to become a United Way Partner Agency. These agencies go through a comprehensive vetting process, during which the agencies are examined and their by-laws, tax forms, and audits are reviewed by a panel of community volunteers. The agencies that applied for partnership were also visited and evaluated as part of the application process.
If accepted, these agencies can receive donations through United Way’s workplace giving campaigns and are eligible to apply for program funding. UWSWA partner agencies also become exempt from sales tax in the state of Alabama, if they are not already, potentially saving thousands of dollars each year.
