Right now it’s easy to feel isolated. But even though we are apart, we are United. We are still a community.

We are a community that is full of hand-raisers and doers. One full of people who are strong, compassionate, generous and full of resolve. We know if we come together, we’ll get through this and be stronger on the other side.

We know, because we’ve seen the power of community. The power of this community.

Or How will you participate in #GivingTuesdayNow?

Nurses. Doctors. Grocery store employees. Delivery drivers. Warehouse workers. First responders. Truck drivers. Cleaners. There are so many people who are on the frontlines of the COVID-19 outbreak. They continue to help keep our community safe and the world running. To honor and celebrate their ongoing sacrifice, let’s say thank you!

Join United Way of Southwest Alabama on May 5 as we rally the entire community to say thank you to the essential workers who have tirelessly and bravely continued to do their jobs. Our effort will be one part of a bigger day of giving and unity called #GivingTuesdayNow.

Austal USA (Austal) hosted their annual charity golf tournament at the Robert Trent Jones Magnolia Grove Golf Course in Mobile, Ala., March 12-13. For the past nine years, this event has benefited the United Way of Southwest Alabama and is the largest single fundraiser held on our behalf. We could not be more grateful for their annual support and look forward to working with them for years to come. The team at Austal, in collaboration with UWSWA staff, does an exceptional job recruiting teams, suppliers, and sponsors who provide the means to hold this incredible event. Thank you to the team at Austal and the suppliers who support their work year-round!

As social distancing policies continue to be in place, many individuals are looking for ways they can help those in need. Several companies unable to open but continue to retain staff are also looking to get involved in the community. United Way Volunteer Connect is an excellent way for community volunteers (individuals or teams) to connect with area agencies with growing needs due to the growing demands on their resources through Coronavirus Volunteer Initiative and the Coronavirus Donation Initiative

For people whose only sources of income are Social Security retirement, Social Security Disability, Railroad Retirement, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), or VA Benefits, filing a tax return is usually not required. And even this year, if these folks are to receive a stimulus payment, no tax return is required except…

If someone in this situation has dependent children under the age of seventeen. In those cases, to get the extra $500 per child under seventeen, they will need to file a request to include the children.

The 2020 Census provides a snapshot of our nation – who we are, where we live, and so much more. Your response matters. Health clinics, fire departments, schools, even roads and highways are some of the aspects of our community the 2020 Census can shape.

  • Census results can determine how billions of dollars in federal funding flow into Alabama and our community each year.
  • Census results determine how many seats in Congress Alabama will get.
  • The Census is mandated by the US Constitution in Article 1, Section 2: The US has counted its population every ten years since 1970.

Do you know someone with a HEART OF GOLD?

Has someone you know gone above and beyond the call of duty?

Do you know someone on the front lines during this unique time that has impacted you or an agency in our community?

UWSWA is proud to honor its volunteers with the Heart of Gold Award. The awards recognize volunteers for their dedication and service in the areas of education, health, financial stability, or essentials. The engagement of the hundreds of individuals who volunteer with us each year is critical to the success of both UWSWA and our 47 partner agencies.
