The United Way of Southwest Alabama (UWSWA) welcomed Mia Lormand as a Spring 2021 intern. Mia attends Spring Hill College, majoring in Studio Art and minoring in Graphic Design. She grew up in the “Frog Capital of the World”, Rayne, Louisiana. 

Mia chose to become an intern at UWSWA because it gave her a chance to improve her graphic design skills in a professional setting and to serve the community in new and exciting ways. She believes the best way to improve the community is bu ensuring there is a sense of fellowship amongst community members. She said, “If everyone is willing to lend a hand, the entire community improves. I find that sharing food is the best way to create a sense of solidarity.

Myles chose to become an intern at UWSWA because it would give him the ability to offer his time to the community which is a very important aspect of his life.

The United Way of Southwest Alabama welcomed Daniella Amador as a Spring 2021 intern.  Daniella attends Spring Hill College, majoring in Computer Information Systems. 

She chose to become an intern for the opportunity to expand her business knowledge while improving her computer skills. She plans for a career in the computer industry. She also believes that giving back is the best way to improve our community.

MONTGOMERY –Governor Kay Ivey on Wednesday, April 7, issued her twenty-sixth supplemental emergency proclamation transitioning the state from an amended Safer at Home Order to a new Safer Apart Order, the third phase of COVID-19 pandemic health orders. Masks will no longer be mandated statewide, but individuals are strongly encouraged to wear a mask or other facial covering when in public and in close contact with other people. This order goes into effect at 5 p.m. on Friday, April 9, 2021 and extends until 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 5, 2021.

United Way of Southwest Alabama distributes 238,500 masks to Mobile County Public Schools students, employees

United Way of Southwest Alabama (UWSWA) is making sure every Mobile County Public Schools student in grades four and above as well as every teacher and staff member receives reusable cloth facemasks to protect them against COVID-19.

The United Way of Southwest Alabama (UWSWA) welcomed Matthew Moreno as a Spring 2021 intern. Matthew attends Spring Hill College, majoring in Communications and plays on the Spring Hill Varsity soccer team.

When asked what the best way to improve the community Matthew replied, “Something that I have learned from being a captain of the Men’s Soccer team here at Spring Hill is that you must put the team first before yourself. Just like in sports, I believe life and community works the same way. If there is a sense of chemistry built in a community then no harm would be tough enough to destroy that bond that keeps the people together”.

Mass vaccination event coming to Mobile County  – 02.02.21

MOBILE – As part of a statewide effort to accelerate COVID-19 vaccination in Alabama, mass vaccination clinics will take place in each of the state’s public health districts next week. There is no cost to receive a vaccine, but everyone vaccinated must be in an eligible group, wear a mask and bring valid identification.

Mobile County is among the eight locations selected by the Alabama Department of Public Health to be a part of the initiative. This includes several hospitals in Mobile: Ascension Providence, Mobile Infirmary, USA Health and Springhill Medical. ADPH launches COVID-19 Vaccination Eligibility Check and Scheduling – 02.02.21

MONTGOMERY –The Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) has launched an online portal for individuals to check their eligibility for vaccination and make appointments for COVID-19 vaccinations at county health departments. The easy-to-navigate portal also provides up-to-date information about additional drive-through and walk-in clinics being offered. The portal can be accessed at https://www.alcovidvaccine.gov/
