09.29.2020 – Governor Kay Ivey on Wednesday issued her eighteenth supplemental emergency proclamation containing an amended Safer at Home Order that includes a statewide mask requirement. Individuals will be required to wear a mask or other facial covering when in public and in close contact with other people, as described in the order. This amended order extends until Sunday, November 8, 2020 at 5:00 p.m.

UWSWA welcomes Bob Grip to our Board of Trustees. Bob is retired from Fox 10 after more than 34 years anchoring news. He is a member of the Alabama Broadcasters’ Hall of Fame, and, in 2019 was, inducted into National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) Suncoast Silver Circle

When asked why he accepted the invitation to join the board, he said, “There is no better time to reach out and help each other than now. I always viewed my role as a journalist as one offering service to the community, which is also the role of the United Way of Southwest Alabama.”

Mobile County Public Schools students will participate in remote learning during the first quarter of the 2020-21 school year using a variety of online resources through the district’s learning management system, Schoology. Students will be assigned the same classroom teachers they would have if we were in a traditional school setting. Those teachers will provide daily instruction, academic support, and intervention with a goal of helping all students be successful. Students will be expected to attend school daily, and we highly recommend that they follow a class schedule as if they were in a traditional school setting.

Our global society is more than six months into the pandemic caused by COVID-19. Some countries have contained the virus better than others. In the United States, case counts and deaths lead the world. Millions of people are out of work while government benefits threaten to lapse. Renters are on the verge of being evicted from their homes, and property owners may follow. We’re seeing long food lines, overwhelmed hospitals, anxious parents and students, and any number of related complications that occur when people cannot meet their basic needs.
