You Matter to Me

By Trista Stout-Walker, Vice President of Community Impact

Many people say that it takes a special person to work in a nonprofit. I hate to burst your bubble, but it does not. To put it simply, it takes a person that is willing to care for someone else. Many of you already do this and have an interest in doing more. In our field this is referred to as “a servant’s heart “or “servant leadership”.

I am very fortunate to have parents, family members, grandparents, “church mamas”, and countless others as wonderful examples. Some may even say that I am a great example of a servant leader. I appreciate your kinds words, but I even have areas that would benefit from more vulnerability and openness. One of those areas is meeting people where they are and trusting others. I have a dear friend that excels in this area. She opens her home to those in need, creates a safe space for healing and vulnerability. She has been burned before, but has supported many positive outcomes. Her servant’s love inspires and challenges me daily. My goal is to be more like Amanda. I will strive to be present, trust in the process, and let those that I serve know that they matter to me and to community. Thank you Amanda for sharing your love, light, and fearlessness with me and others. You will remain with me always.
