Coronavirus: Income Tax Filing Update 2

For people whose only sources of income are Social Security retirement, Social Security Disability, Railroad Retirement, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), or VA Benefits, filing a tax return is usually not required. And even this year, if these folks are to receive a stimulus payment, no tax return is required except…

If someone in this situation has dependent children under the age of seventeen. In those cases, to get the extra $500 per child under seventeen, they will need to file a request to include the children.

UPDATE – May 4, 2020

Individuals receiving SSI or VA benefits who do not file tax returns with dependents under the age of 17, must provide the IRS with their dependents’ information in order to receive their Economic Impact Payment (EIP) plus $500 for each child. Deadline to file is Tuesday, May 5th. If you are unable to file, you will have to wait until the next filing season to claim the credit for your dependents.

Resources to assist SSI & VA recipients.

Deadline to file is 12:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 22, 2020 to receive the additional $500 for their dependents to do so.

Those receiving federal benefits, who have with children, and who weren’t required file a tax return in 2018 or 2019 should visit the Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here tool on IRS.gov.

Once their $1,200 payment has been issued, they will not be eligible to use the Non-Filer tool to add eligible children. Their payment will be $1,200 and, by law, the additional $500 per eligible child amount would be paid in association with a return filing for tax year 2020..

VITA SUSPENDED

Update – VITA remains suspended at this time. The IRS and the VITA Coordinators will begin scheduling appointments as soon as they are able.

Based on recommendations from authorities to avoid large public gatherings and for the safety of our volunteers and clients, we have decided to suspend tax preparation services at all United Way of Southwest Alabama locations effective Tuesday, March 17, 2020. All individuals with appointments will be contacted directly and notified of changes. We will not be taking new appointments until we resume services.

Since we are unable to offer face to face tax preparation at this time, as an alternative you may contact us by email at taxhelp@uwswa.org to request free software for which you may use to prepare your tax return at no charge.

VITA volunteers are also offering email support to taxpayers who use our software. We can answer questions about tax law topics and the software, so long as those questions fall within the scope of our training. Please send your questions to taxhelp@uwswa.org and we will respond as quickly as we can. If we are unable to answer your question, we will let you know.
