2021 Staff Spotlight – Mary Clare Tortorice

Mary Clare Tortorice, Manager of Donor Relations, came to work at United Way of Southwest Alabama because she was inspired to make a difference during the Covid-19 pandemic. “For a countless number of years I have heard about United Way of Southwest Alabama, but when the Covid-19 pandemic hit our service area, I was ready to help a nonprofit that was eager to serve Mobile during times of uncertainty,” she said. “That is when I landed at the doors of United Way of Southwest Alabama.”

Mary Clare is passionate about many causes. When asked which United Way cause she is most passionate about, she said, “I know that each cause leads to other causes, so it cannot be narrowed down to just one. I believe that when you support the community safety net that you are creating a better future for generations to come.” She is especially excited about the Emerging Leaders and Project Blue Print initiatives. “I believe these two projects are vital for the future leaders in our community,” she said.

Mary Clare is a newlywed. She and her husband took their honeymoon trip to Denver a month ago. “Denver has beautiful attractions and the most comfortable weather! It was also great because I was with my best friend, my husband!”

Her favorite activity outside of work is hanging out with her family and friends. She also enjoys cross-stitching in the evenings. One more thing to know about Mary Clare: “Most of my co-workers probably do not know that I have a fake tooth!”
