Inaugural Hometown NFL Huddle Charity Golf Tournament a Success

On Thursday, April 7, United Way of Southwest Alabama held its Inaugural Hometown NFL Huddle Charity Golf Tournament at Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Magnolia Grove. Thirty-nine players, including 8 current or retired NFL players, spent the day on the course and helped bring awareness to the close partnership between United Way and the NFL that has existed for more than 40 years.

“We firmly believe Alabama has not only the most athletic and esteemed football players, but also the largest number of active and retired NFL players in the nation,” said UWSWA President & CEO Clifford Grimes. “This tournament gave us the platform to highlight the careers and contributions of Alabama natives to both the NFL and the communities where they were raised. It also provided the chance for individuals and business leaders with a passion for helping the community play golf alongside hometown football heroes while, at the same time, making a meaningful contribution to programs and services that impact Southwest Alabama.”

By harnessing the star power of NFL players, both current and retired, United Way of Southwest Alabama’s Hometown NFL Huddle Charity Golf Tournaments provides the means of communicating the work of United Way to a broader audience while putting faces on a league of players typically hidden by helmets.

“United Way embodies the spirit of people coming together from all walks of life, from all parts of our community, sharing a common aspiration to improve the quality of life for everyone, regardless of where they’re from or where they live,” said Grimes. “This spirit of coming together was embodied in the act of numerous NFL players from various leagues and teams uniting together at this event.”

In total, the tournament raised $19,000.
