The United Way of Southwest Alabama is proud to announce the 2024 Choctaw County Annual Meeting & Awards Ceremony, scheduled to take place on Thursday, September 12, at 5:30 PM at Ezell’s Fish Camp (776 Ezell Road, Lavaca 36904). The event is generously sponsored by Georgia Pacific – Naheola Mill.

This annual gathering will feature a keynote address by Nick Shaver, a Business Development Specialist with the Alabama Department of Commerce. Nick works closely with economic developers in the 45 rural counties of the state, managing new industrial development projects and collaborating with key stakeholders in communities across Alabama. Originally from Valley, AL in Chambers County, Nick attended Troy University, where he earned a degree in Marketing. During his time at Troy, he was actively involved in campus organizations, including the Student Government Association, Greek Life, and Trojan Ambassadors. Nick is deeply passionate about Alabama, particularly its rural areas, and is committed to making a positive impact on the state’s future through his work. He currently resides in Montgomery, AL.

The event will also recognize and celebrate the remarkable contributions of individuals and organizations within Choctaw County who have played a vital role in advancing the mission of the United Way. Awards will be presented in the following categories:

  • Heart of Gold – Nick Harrell, Choctaw County Extension/Alabama Cooperative Extension System
  • Outstanding Campaign Coordinator – Sonja M. Brown, First US Bank
  • Outstanding Campaign – First US Bank
  • Outstanding Corporate Partner – Georgia Pacific Naheola Mill.
  • Outstanding Community Partner – WJC Enterprises

The evening promises to be a celebration of community spirit, collaboration, and the collective effort to improve the quality of life for residents of Choctaw County. Attendees will also have the opportunity to hear about the successes of the past year and the vision for the year ahead.
