United Way of Southwest Alabama’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is expanding, and we’re looking for dedicated volunteers to join our team for the 2025 tax season. The VITA program offers free tax preparation services to local individuals and families, and with demand for these services on the rise, we need more volunteers to help make a difference in the Mobile area.

The VITA program is recruiting volunteers for tax centers throughout Mobile County to support individuals who may otherwise lack access to free, quality tax preparation. No prior tax preparation experience is necessary to volunteer, as training supported by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will be provided. Volunteers will gain valuable skills in tax preparation, teamwork, and client service, all while making a direct impact on the financial security of the community.

“Volunteering with VITA is an opportunity to develop practical skills while helping others,” said Justine Bixler, President & CEO of United Way of Southwest Alabama. “By volunteering with VITA, you’re supporting financial stability for individuals and families who rely on accurate, free tax preparation, which can help them access vital tax credits and refunds.”

Key Volunteer Program Details:

  • No Experience Required: All volunteers receive IRS-supported training, beginning in mid-November, which spans four to five weeks.
  • Volunteer Roles: Volunteers will work alongside trained staff and other volunteers, preparing and reviewing tax returns for accuracy.
  • Commitment to Service: This is a volunteer-only opportunity. Volunteers are not allowed to accept payment for the tax returns they prepare. This training is not intended for those wishing to start a paid tax preparation business.
  • Skills Needed: Volunteers need not be math experts; the software handles calculations. Essential skills include teamwork, client listening, and a commitment to accuracy.

To learn more, prospective volunteers are invited to attend informational orientation sessions at the end of October, where they’ll gain an overview of the VITA program and can decide if it’s right for them.

United Way’s VITA program offers a meaningful way for volunteers to give back while gaining hands-on experience and helping others. Interested individuals can register online to learn more and receive updates on key dates.
