Board of Trustee Spotlight: Mark J. Burnett, Jr.
United Way of Southwest Alabama is privileged to spotlight Mark J. Burnett, Jr., an esteemed member of our board, whose commitment to community betterment and leadership has left an indelible mark on our region. Mark serves as the Business Manager for UA Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 119, embodying dedication to his role by focusing on putting members to work, safeguarding the local’s signatory contractors, overseeing jurisdictional compliance, and managing day-to-day operations.
Mark’s journey into community service began when he accepted the invitation to join our board, a decision he made without hesitation. Reflecting on this commitment, he notes that the experience has been immensely rewarding, reinforcing his belief in the power of collective action to drive positive change.
A guiding principle for Mark is encapsulated in his leadership ethos: “Do the things you are supposed to, even when you don’t want to.” This steadfast commitment to responsibility and accountability underscores his approach to both professional and community endeavors.
Mark’s cherished family tradition involves bonding over football games with his father, cherishing the shared moments and creating lasting memories. His educational background includes graduating from the UA Apprenticeship program at Local 119 in 2001, laying the foundation for his distinguished career.
Beyond his professional sphere, Mark’s interests lie in enhancing the lives of Local 119’s membership. He envisions a Southwest Alabama that is “better” – characterized by the proliferation of higher-paying jobs for everyone in Mobile, a vision aligned with United Way’s commitment to socioeconomic progress and equity for all.
