2023 Intern Spotlight – Troy Gibson

At the United Way of Southwest Alabama (UWSWA), Troy Gibson, an aspiring healthcare administrator majoring in Medical Sociology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), has found a transformative internship opportunity. Hailing from Satsuma, Alabama, Troy believes that internships provide invaluable real-world experience, allowing him to enhance his professional skills and contribute meaningfully to his future career.

When asked about the significance of his internship opportunity, Troy shared, “This internship means the world to me. It’s an opportunity to apply the knowledge I’ve gained in my studies and make a real impact in the community. The chance to work with United Way of Southwest Alabama, an organization that is dedicated to improving lives and making a difference, aligns perfectly with my long-term goals in healthcare administration.”

Troy’s passion for serving others extends beyond his academic pursuits. He has actively engaged in volunteer work, including dedicating his time at the Alabama Wildlife Center, where he helps rehabilitate wild birds. When Troy is not immersed in his studies or volunteering, he finds solace in pursuing his hobbies. You can often find him challenging himself by climbing at the rock wall or practicing Brazilian jiu-jitsu. These activities not only provide a healthy outlet but also help him develop discipline, resilience, and problem-solving skills – qualities that undoubtedly contribute to his professional growth.

Reflecting on his favorite family tradition, Troy fondly recalls the joy of baking cookies while decorating the Christmas tree. This festive tradition brings his family together, creating cherished memories and strengthening their bond. Such traditions are a reminder of the importance of nurturing relationships and creating meaningful connections within a community.

When asked about his perspective on improving the quality of life in a community, Troy emphasizes the significance of understanding and meeting the diverse needs of community members. He believes that effective communication is key to achieving this. Troy explains, “Catering to the needs of everyone in the community is vital, and to do so, you need to understand their needs. The only way to know what they need is via good communication, so ensuring there is a stable line of communication is pertinent.
