Dr. Andi M. Kent, the Executive Vice President and Provost at the University of South Alabama (USA), is stepping into the role of the 2024-25 Board of Trustee Chair for the United Way of Southwest Alabama. Her job focus at USA is to work alongside the president and the executive leadership team to ensure the organization continues its upward and onward trajectory, making a positive impact on those USA serves as the flagship university of the Gulf Coast.
As a native Mobilian, Dr. Kent sees her role on the UWSWA Board of Trustees as an opportunity to give back to the community she deeply loves. “I consider it an honor to collaborate with colleagues and organizations dedicated to helping the citizens of Southwest Alabama,” she says. This commitment to her community is a driving force behind her dedication to the board.
To Dr. Kent, leadership is about serving others to help them achieve their goals and dreams while making the world a better place. She believes that true leadership embodies actions that speak louder than words and involves giving of oneself with heart and passion for something deeply believed in. “Leadership exudes selfless dedication and commitment, a humbleness and gratitude for the opportunities afforded that are inherent with being a leader,” she explains.
Dr. Kent’s family life is equally fulfilling. She has been married to Derek Kent for 27 years. Their son, Andrew, is 20 and a Business major at the University of South Alabama, where he serves as the President of SAE Fraternity and was recently honored as a South Alabama Southerner. Andrew is a Jaguar through and through. Their daughter, Mary Elizabeth, attends Baker High School and is involved in many clubs and organizations. She was recently named a Mobile Azalea Trail Maid and proudly represents the lavender color, which has become the family’s new favorite. Additionally, their four and a half-pound puppy, Princess, brings joy to their lives every day.
Family traditions hold a special place in Dr. Kent’s heart. She enjoys simply spending time together with her loved ones, whether at home, creating new memories through travel, or regular trips to the beach. Cruising and Disney vacations are particular favorites. With all their extended family living nearby, they are doubly blessed to enjoy many family festivities together.
Dr. Kent’s educational background is impressive, with a B.S. in Early Childhood Education, a Master’s in Early Childhood Education, and a Ph.D. in Instructional Design and Development. When she is not working, she loves spending time with her family, cheering on her children in their extracurricular activities, going on family vacations, relaxing at the beach, and reading a good book.
As a member of City Hope Church, Dr. Kent’s faith plays an integral role in her life. Looking ahead, she envisions Southwest Alabama as a vibrant community where both the young and the young at heart find joy in their daily lives as they work, play, and live.
