You earned your money, now keep it by using VITA's free tax preparation services; File it by receiving a maximum refund with the help of the IRS trained and certified volunteers; and Save it by understanding your money and learning how to save for tomorrow.

United Way of Southwest Alabama (UWSWA), with the generous help of our volunteers, launches the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program on Monday, January 30, 2023. The VITA program offers FREE tax filing help to people whose household income is $60,000 or less. We also serve taxpayers over the age of sixty as well as persons with disabilities.

An IRS certified volunteer prepares each participant’s tax return. Another qualified volunteer reviews the return and then files it electronically with the IRS. Participants can receive any refund by check or by direct deposit to their bank account, and taxpayers who owe can mail their payments or have them direct debited.

According to VITA Program Coordinator Brad Martin, “”For many low income families, the tax time moment represents the largest infusion of cash they’ll see in a year. That can help them catch up on bills, purchase things their children need for school, or save for a rainy day.”

This year, UWSWA has four VITA locations in Mobile County, with sites available Mondays through Saturday. Appointments must be scheduled in advance.
