AT&T* and Human I-T provided the United Way of Southwest Alabama with 100 refurbished laptops yesterday to distribute to Mobile students and families in need.

“Equipping students with devices is a strategic step toward a more connected and informed society, where no student is left behind in the ever-evolving landscape of education,” said Justine Bixler, President & CEO, United Way of Southwest Alabama. “By leveling the playing field, we give students access to the tools they need to reach their full potential, both now and in the future.”

“In today’s world, access to technology is as fundamental as access to textbooks,” said State Representative Adline Clarke. “Ensuring our students have access to devices is crucial for bridging the digital divide and providing equal educational opportunities.”

This event is part of a broader AT&T employee effort to help bridge the digital divide and distribute laptops to students in qualifying households before they head back to school.

“AT&T is proud to collaborate with organizations like the United Way of Southwest Alabama to help level the playing field for students in Mobile,” said Cleo Washington, Vice President, AT&T Alabama. “Connectivity is vital for students, and we’re glad we can provide these resources to those that need them most.”

According to U.S. Census Bureau data, millions nationwide still don’t have access to the internet or connected devices needed to fully participate in the online world, an issue known as the digital divide.

This effort is part of AT&T’s initiative  to help address the digital divide through internet accessibility, affordability and safe adoption. AT&T is committing $5 billion to help 25 million people get and stay connected to high-speed internet by 2030.
