United Way Staff Spotlight: Sara Knox, Financial Assistant

Sara Knox has been a Financial Assistant at the United Way of Southwest Alabama (UWSWA) for four years, having transitioned from a partner agency where she spent seven years. Her desire to have a broader impact on the community inspired her to join UWSWA. With a solid foundation in finance, including a decade-long career in banking, Sara’s expertise has been invaluable in her evolving role at UWSWA. Over the past year, her responsibilities have expanded to include more strategic financial oversight, working closely with the accounting firm and CEO to manage daily in-house finances and contribute to broader financial strategies.

Sara’s commitment to UWSWA’s mission is deeply personal and rooted in her upbringing. Her mother worked for over 25 years at a partner agency serving people with disabilities and the elderly, instilling in Sara the importance of service from a young age. This background has shaped her guiding values of compassion and service, driving her to make a significant difference in her community.

Outside of work, Sara maintains a healthy work-life balance by spending time at the beach, swimming, and soaking up the sun. As a mother of four and an avid sports fan, much of her time is devoted to her children’s activities and enjoying sports discussions and games with them. This tradition extends back to their younger days when they played football trivia each night before bed. “Compassion is an action word with no boundaries,” by Prince, perfectly reflects her boundless approach to both her career and personal life.
