United Way Annual Meeting Scheduled for August 14 and August 15, 2019
United Way of Southwest Alabama’s (UWSWA) 2019 ANNUAL MEETING will feature keynote speaker Pulitzer Prize Winner Fox Butterfield on Wednesday, August 14 and Thursday August 15, 2019. The two day event will feature four distinct activities. They include a Community Roundtable, Campaign Kickoff, Second-line style parade, and the keynote luncheon.

About the speaker: Fox Butterfield is the author of China: Alive in the Bitter Sea, which won the National Book Award, In My Father’s House: A New View of How Crime Runs in the Family, and All God’s Children: The Bosket Family and the American Tradition of Violence. He was a member of The New York Times reporting team that won the Pulitzer Prize for its publication of the Pentagon Papers, and served as a bureau chief for the newspaper in Boston, Saigon, Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Beijing, where he opened The Times bureau in 1979.
He lives in Portland, Oregon, with his wife Elizabeth Mehren, a longtime journalist with the Los Angeles Times and professor of journalism at Boston University.

Community Roundtable led by Mr. Butterfield in the Government Plaza Auditorium.
Fox Butterfield will be joined by Mobile County Health Department Officer Bernard H. Eichold II, M.D., Dr.P.H., F.A.C.P; Mobile County Public School System Superintendent Chresal Threadgill; Mobile County Sheriff Sam Cochran; Director of Mobile County Department of Human Resources Stephanie Streeter; and other community leaders to discuss the topics addressed in Butterfield’s books All God’s Children: The Bosket Family and the American Tradition of Violence and In My Father’s House: A New View of How Crime Runs in the Family. The discussion will focus on the impact of generational violence and crime as well as possible solutions to these complicated issues and moderated by Kelly Finely, anchor and news producer with FM Talk 106.5. UWSWA Campaign Kickoff & Proclamation Announcements at the UWSWA office
Mayor Sandy Stimpson and Commissioner Merceria Ludgood will proclaim the day as United Way Day. At this time we will unveil the 2019 UWSWA Campaign Goal and announce the Pacesetter achievements. This event is free and open to the public. Immediately following we will revive UWSWA tradition to Second- Line Style Parade to the Renaissance Mobile Riverview Hotel & Plaza. The parade will include UWSWA partner agencies and their clients along with UWSWA Board of Directors, 2019 Campaign Cabinet, UWSWA staff, volunteers, the USA Band,the USA Cheerleaders, Azalea Trail Maids, and Volunteer and 2018 Campaign Award winners. The parade will conclude at the Renaissance Mobile Riverview Plaza with a Campaign Kickoff Rally. The USA Band and Cheerleaders will lead the rally. From there guests with tickets will proceed to the Renaissance Mobile Hotel Ballroom.

UWSWA Keynote Luncheon and Annual Meeting
The luncheon will feature Mayor Sandy Stimpson, Fox Butterfield’s keynote speech, Volunteer award acknowledgements, the 2018 and 2019 Annual Campaign Report, the Annual Meeting with installation of new Trustees. Each table will host a UWSWA partner agency Executive Director to give an opportunity for guests to learn more about what the agency does and how they fit into the community safety-net.
Luncheon tickets are $60 per person or $600 for a table of nine. Deadline to purchase tickets is August 2, 2019.
