The Basics Southwest Alabama is a new program designed to help expectant parents and parents of children birth to age three learn the importance of brain development during the early years.

The Basics are five free, fun, simple, and powerful strategies that every family can use to give every child a strong start beginning at birth. The strategies encompass most of what experts say is essential for development during the first few years. The Basics Strategies do not require fancy toys, and they do not take any extra time. Instead, families can use them during the time they spend in their children’s regular daily routines. These simple tasks should be daily and intentional to help eradicate skill gaps and build a solid foundation for cognitive, social, and emotional skills for lifelong benefits.

UWSWA’s partners in The Basics are AT&T Alabama, Coastal Conversations, The J.L. Bedsole Foundation, Mobile United, The Crampton Trust, and the University of South Alabama.
