There is a lot of information circulating about the Coronavirus and the effects it may have in our area. We have visited the Alabama Health Department and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) to collect the most current information to share with our partners.

(March 10, 2020) There have not been any changes to the daily operation of the United Way of Southwest Alabama (UWSWA) or our upcoming events but we are continuing to monitor the situation. If it is recommended by the CDC, the AL Health Dept., or Mobile County Health Dept. that we make changes to any of our operations, we will comply and notify our partner agencies, company partners, and the public.

Summary & Scope:

Develop, retain and significantly grow the level of financial support and commitment to United Way of Southwest Alabama (UWSWA). Maintain and continuously develop relationships with key constituents at various levels within assigned company and individual accounts. Identify viable opportunities for additional involvement with UWSWA. Work closely with these constituents to plan, organize and implement campaign and other United Way activities to ensure a successful, stronger and sustained United Way commitment. Aggressively identify, recruit and develop new business prospects to ensure continued campaign growth.

The primary focus of this position is on the regional development of the United Way of Southwest Alabama (UWSWA) campaign in Choctaw, Clarke and Washington Counties. Successful completion of on-boarding and training is required.

National 2-1-1 Day, celebrated on February 11th (2/11) each year, recognizes our than 200, 2-1-1’s located throughout the country. 2-1-1 is a free, confidential information and referral service that connects more than 93 percent of our nation to essential health and human services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It is an integral part of the community safety-net and can be easily accessed online of over the phone. 

Workers may get a larger tax refund this year because of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). But to get it, you must file a tax return and claim it.

Today, January 31, 2020, marks the 14th anniversary of Awareness Day, a nationwide effort to increase awareness about EITC and free tax preparation sites. This year, IRS is promoting EITC and providing information on other refundable tax credits that you may be eligible for. This includes the Child Tax Credit (CTC), the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC), the Credit for Other Dependents (ODC) and the American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC).

(Mobile, AL) – Students from Palmer Pillans Middle School (Pillans) and employees from Airbus Americas Engineering in Mobile (Airbus) launched the 2020 Airbus Foundation Flying Challenge (AFFC) on Friday, January 17, 2020 with the first of their weekly mentoring sessions. During the session, students where tasked to make whirlybirds with three materials and a finished product sample. This fun activity focused on the concepts of gravity, weight, lift, and aerodynamics.

 United Way of Southwest Alabama (UWSWA) partner agency, AIDS Alabama, released their executive summary report, “It’s Harder to Find the Syringe Than the Drug,” detailing the results of the first statewide needs assessment conducted among Alabamians who inject drugs. This past spring AIDS Alabama, in collaboration with the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s (UAB) Center for AIDS Research and the Alabama Harm Reduction Coalition, surveyed 124 Alabama residents who inject drugs or who provide direct care to individuals who inject drugs. Through a combination of questionnaire and focus group responses, they aimed to gain critical insights into the need of Alabamians who inject drugs and help inform advocacy priorities for ending the opioid epidemic in the state.

United Way of Southwest Alabama (UWSWA) announced Trista Stout-Walker as the new Vice President of Community Impact. Stout-Walker has served the UWSWA as Manager of Regional Development – County Relations since May 2018. During her time in that position, she has made a tremendous impact on Choctaw, Clarke, and Washington Counties in both fundraising and community engagement. She exceeded all the 2018 & 2019 Campaign goals.
