2021 Staff Spotlight – Mary Clare Tortorice

Mary Clare Tortorice, Manager of Donor Relations, came to work at United Way of Southwest Alabama because she was inspired to make a difference during the Covid-19 pandemic. “For a countless number of years I have heard about United Way of Southwest Alabama, but when the Covid-19 pandemic hit our service area, I was ready to help a nonprofit that was eager to serve Mobile during times of uncertainty,” she said. “That is when I landed at the doors of United Way of Southwest Alabama.”

United Way Kicks Off Annual Community Campaign on September 1, 2021

On Wednesday, September 1, 2021, United Way of Southwest Alabama (UWSWA) will feature its partner agencies, internal programs, award winners, sponsors, and pacesetters. During all of the FOX 10 newscasts, including Studio 10, there will be guests appearing to talk about all things UWSWA. In addition to the television broadcast, Fox 10 and UWSWA will each host live streamed segments on Facebook.

This year, iHeart Radio local stations will feature UWSWA on its 5 local radio stations and digital platforms.

Shoe Station staff, president donated $20K to United Way of Southwest Alabama

MOBILE, Alabama – Last week, Southeastern retail chain Shoe Station pledged to give over $20,000 to United Way of Southwest Alabama (UWSWA) in 2021. More than 200 members of Shoe Station’s team collectively pledged approximately $11,000, and Shoe Station’s president, Brent Barkin, and his wife, Lauren, personally matched the staff’s donation.

2021 Staff Spotlight – Sara Knox

Financial Assistant Sara Knox has been with United Way of Southwest Alabama for two years. “The opportunity arose and I was eager to take it,” she said. “I’ve always admired what United Way does, so I was excited to join the amazing team here.”

2021 Intern Spotlight – Kora Myers

The United Way of Southwest Alabama (UWSWA) welcomed Kora Myers as a Spring 2021 intern. Kora attends the University of South Alabama, majoring in Communication with a concentration in Strategic Communication and minoring in Sports Marketing. She grew up in Vineland, Alabama which is in Marengo County.

Kora chose to become an intern at UWSWA because it gives her an opportunity to see what it is like to design for a nonprofit agency. Working with UWSWA also gives her a creative outlet while also giving her professional and design skills for the future.

2021 Staff Spotlight – Erica Berger

Office Manager Erica Berger joined United Way of Southwest Alabama when she was hired as temporary help during the holidays. She enjoyed the work so much that she wanted to stay. “An opportunity came up and they called and asked if I was interested and I was,” she said. “I’ve been here for 3 years.”

Fox 10 Playground Project

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) — Fox10 News kicked off a brand new project Wednesday, teaming up with the United Way of Southwest Alabama, PlayPower and ‘Make an Impact’ to build a brand new playground at Walsh Park.

Walsh Park, located at 1401 Windsor Ave in Mobile, has given children in the surrounding neighborhood a space to get outdoors and play but has been missing something — that something being a playground.

The playground that will be built will be more than just a place for play, it will also be great for families and neighbors to create memories together.

Resource Development Associate Delena Wylie came to United Way of Southwest Alabama (UWSWA) fresh out of high school. She was looking for a job with meaning and purpose, she said, and has been with UWSWA for 23 years.

Emerging Leaders – June Lunch & Learn: Professional Development

United Way of Southwest Alabama’s Emerging Leaders is hosting our second Lunch and Learn of the year. This professional development workshop will consist of a panel of accomplished Mobilians, break-out rooms, and a Q&A session.
